Event Details

Many public libraries are using games.This seminar will provide an introduction to serious games and present some ideas for how they could be used in your library.  It will also provide examples of how public libraries are using console games in their service delivery.  This is a seminar to introduce you to some new ideas.

9.00 tea/coffee in the McDonalds Room

9.30 – 9.35 Welcome from Executive

9.40 – 10.40 Gary Hayes, Coordinator & Lecturer, Multi Platform Content at the Australian Film TV and Radio School will introduce participants to serious games

10.50 – 11.30 Sam Doust from ABC innovation will talk about Bluebird AR which is a new drama-cum-alternate reality game-cum-interactive experience. The project is based around the themes of climate change and geo-engineering, and blurs fictional scenarios with real world events. @samdoust

11.35 – 12.10 Dr Martin Masek from Edith Cowan University. 

Last year Edith Cowan University received an Ian MacLean Award by National Archives of Australia to research the role of computer simulation in the archives online space.   The Dr Martin Masek is the Principal researcher on this project.  Dr Masek will present work done on AE2 Commander, an authentic WWI submarine computer simulation being built as one of two deliverables under the terms of the award. The AE2 was an Australian submarine that featured in naval operations in support of the Gallipoli landings in 1915.  The project aims to research the role of computer simulation in the archives online space and to foster understanding of how original sources can be used as part of computer simulation and serious gaming.

1.15pm– 2.15  Jaap Van De Geer and Erik Boekesteijn from DOK, the Delft Public Library, will talk about the use of games in their library, including their collaboration with TU Delft in the creation of the serious game, Dark ink.

2.25 - 2.55  Huon Longman, a PhD student at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) will talk about his research into the value of online relationships in World of Warcraft

3.00 – 3.25 Afternoon tea

3.25 – 4.00 Sue Killham from Narrandera and Penny Amberg from Bega will talk about how their libraries are using console games

4.00pm Evaluate and close
